Psychological Assessments in Family Proceedings

We provide expert witness services to assist legal professionals, Local Authorities, and the Courts
working with individuals in family pre-proceedings or proceedings. This can include a range of
assessments, from cognitive assessments, diagnostic assessments, to full psychological assessments. We will always strive to work with you to identify the best possible assessments to assist with your needs and the needs of clients and provide these within the best possible timescales in order to assist.

Cognitive Assessments

Our psychologists are available to conduct assessments relating to the cognitive functioning of individuals in family pre-proceedings or proceedings in order to assist professionals with the best way to work with and assess clients.

This can include general cognitive assessments, to include an assessment for the diagnosis of learning disability where required, or more detailed exploratory assessments, such as those for long-term memory or executive functioning.

Full Psychological Assessments

Our psychologists are available to carry out full psychological assessments of parents or carers in family pre-proceedings or proceedings with the aim of identifying how that individual’s life experiences, from childhood into adulthood, have impacted upon their personality development and mental health, and how this, in turn, has impacted upon their parenting ability or engagement in maladaptive behaviours.

Intervention and support strategies would then also be recommended in order to assist in the process and to also assist with decision making within the proceedings.

Capacity Assessments

Our psychologists can provide mental capacity assessments of parents or carers involved in family pre-proceedings or proceedings, to identify their mental capacity on any particular issue, including, but not limited to, their capacity to litigate.

Capacity Assessments are always decision specific, and so our psychologists would carry out separate mental capacity assessments for each decision to be made.

Diagnostic Assessments

Our psychologists are experienced in providing assessments for diagnostic purposes in family proceedings and pre-proceedings.

This can include, but is not limited to, diagnoses of personality disorder, autism spectrum disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Adjustment Disorder, Depression, or Anxiety.

An individual’s diagnostic profile will the be utilised to explain the difficulties that have occurred in functional terms, in order to assist with the recommendations for interventions and to assist inform decision making
